Introduction

FEMALE HAIR TRANSPLANT

Dr. Paul prides himself on delivering natural, long-lasting results with minimal down time.

While most people associate hair loss only with men, nearly half of women suffer visible hair loss by the age of fifty. For these women, the progressively thinning hair can be emotionally devastating and creates a feeling of isolation and hopelessness. The dual board-certified hair restoration surgeons at HairCareMD can help determine the root cause of your hair loss and your candidacy for hair transplant in addition to the other treatment options that exist for hair loss. If you are a female client interested in increasing your hair density, then a Female Hair Transplant in New York City’s HairCareMD might be worth your consideration.

The Basics

What is a Female Hair Transplant?

A Female Hair Transplant is a modern technique to transfer single hair units, called follicles, into regions of thinning on our female clients’ scalp. A study has shown that 52% of women were extremely upset by their hair loss, compared with 28% of men. In a Glamour magazine survey, over half of the women stated “If my hair looks good, I look attractive no matter what I’m wearing or how I look otherwise,” and “If my hair isn’t right, nothing else can make me feel that I look good”.

Hair restoration focuses on re-establishing a natural-looking hairline and improving overall hair density. We recognize that each gender has a separate pattern of hair loss which is influenced by life events and genetics.  Our personalized hair restoration plan will be easy to maintain and aims to produce results that compliment your face in a natural, age-appropriate way.

We have excellent options to help women suffering from hair loss. Androgenic alopecia or female pattern hair loss is caused by various factors such as aging, scarring, medical conditions (thyroid, anemia, vitamin deficiency, lupus), medicine-induced, radiation, and psychological reasons such as hair-pulling. The good news is that hair transplants can treat hair loss due to most of these conditions.

In terms of methodology at HairCareMD in New York City, our surgeons are board-certified and perform all forms of hair transplants, allowing you to receive the best option for your hair restoration. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transfer (FUT) are the two main technique categories for hair restoration. In FUE, a micropunch is used to extract the individual follicle from the donor site. In FUT, a surgical ellipse is taken from the donor site and sewn closed. The individual follicles are dissected by hand under magnification from the strip. Each approach creates aesthetically beautiful outcomes with the difference being how the donor hair is gathered.

Hair transplant is an excellent, maintenance-free form of hair restoration for women. Our results are natural, consistent, permanent, and virtually pain-free. Hair transplants can lower the hairline, reinforce the hairline, and improve density on the scalp as well as the eyebrows other areas of hair loss.

What’s The First Step?

The first step to getting a female hair transplant in NYC is to schedule a consultation at our New York City office with Dr. Benjamin Paul. Our dedicated team of hair specialists will take the time to sit down with you, understand your goals, and provide you with our expert recommendations.

What to expect on the day of a Female Hair Transplant

All of our hair procedures take place in our gorgeous, state-of-the-art facility. On the morning of the procedure, you will meet the physician and the transplant team. We will confirm the boundaries of the recipient site. We will give you a haircut to reveal the necessary donor site, but it is not our routine to shave the recipient site, which differs greatly from most clinics.

A hair transplant is an outpatient procedure where local anesthesia is sufficient to keep our patients comfortable. Most patients can nap and listen to music during the session. Some patients ask for a deeper level of anesthesia, and we are happy to be able to provide this upon advance request.

In our office, we are focused on optimizing the viability of each hair follicle as well as the health of the scalp. The day is split into three parts; harvest, site making, and implantation. For the harvest, you will be face down as we extract the hair follicles. The harvest takes about 45 minutes to 3 hours depending on the amount of hair harvested and the technique being used. FUT universally provides a faster harvest. For the rest of the procedure, you will be resting on your back.

Next, “sites” or pockets are made by the physician. This sets the artistry of the result and is a key reason to choose our office. Artistry varies significantly between clinicians. The sites do not just determine the distribution and spread of the hair follicles but also control the exit angulation, which is crucial to creating a gorgeous result that blends in naturally. The final step of a hair transplant is the placement of the follicles into the sites. This process will be performed with multiple skilled team members working simultaneously. Your physician will be guiding the team and adjusting the aesthetic as needed.

After the hair transplant, most patients have a wrap placed on their head and your post-op care instructions will be reviewed before discharge.

Female Hair Transplant Recovery

At the end of a hair transplant surgery session, the patient may return home or for out-of-town patients to their hotel room. There are no drains present. On the next day, patients bathe without washing their hair and two days after surgery gently wash their hair using a modified technique, which will be taught during your visit.

The forehead may appear slightly swollen, the back of the scalp might feel tight, and there might be scabbing at the transplant sites during the first week. If this is the case, there is no need to panic as this is fairly normal.

Within 1-2 weeks, the redness fades, the scabs flake off, and patients look normal and can return to routine social, work, and physical activities. The transplanted hairs are expected to shed a few weeks after the transplant. After shedding, the follicles rest before growing new hair.

In the months following Female Hair Transplant surgery, the hair will cycle.  The hair will grow, shed, rest, and then grow.  The result begins to appear 6 months after transplant and continues to improve over the following 1-2 years. Finally, your new hair grows normally at the same rate as your other hair, about 1-2 cm per month. This means your transplant area will continue to thicken and mature with time.

In general, FUT and FUE are priced similarly in our office. We do not wish for you to make a permanent decision between techniques based on cost.
