Why do bald spots happen on the head and what can be done about them?
There are three main reasons for bald spots:
The first reason for a bald spot is the loss of hair associated with pattern baldness, known as androgenic alopecia. The type of baldness in men involves a bald spot in the back of the head. There may also be a recession of the hairline and only a horseshoe of hair remaining. In this instance, a hair transplant may restore the hairline and fill the bald spot.
A second reason for a bald spot is alopecia areata, which is a reversible form of autoimmune hairloss. This may occur in men and women and involves a circular loss of hair. There may be multiple patches of loss that occur together or at separate times. Very rarely, there is diffuse loss known as alopecia universalis. In the majority of cases, hair returns and this is aided by medical therapy.
A third reason for hair loss is traumatic loss. This is either from trauma to the scalp or from reconstruction after skin cancer. The damage to hair follicles and scar tissue may result in permanent loss of hair. This is treatable with hair transplant:
