What is a follicular unit? How does we use the variations on follicular units to our advantage during a hair transplant?

New York City

By Dr. Benjamin Paul

The follicular unit is the fundamental unit from which hair grows. The unit contains a hair shaft, a muscle (the arrector pili – the muscle that makes hair “stand on edge”) and a sebaceous gland.  The unit contains 1, 2, 3 or 4 hairs.  The single hairs are very valuable to line the hair line. The 2, 3 and 4 haired follicular units are used for density. Rarely, a 5 haired unit may be present and is very valuable. On average, most adults have 2 or 3 hairs per follicle (average 2.3). The distribution, density, and angulation of the shaft of the follicular unit are all artfully placed to create beautiful and natural hair transplant results.
