Hair Care Do’s and Don’ts During Social Distancing

New York City

By Dr. Benjamin Paul

NYC is amidst a significant COVID-19 viral outbreak. We are being asked as a society to care for each other through “social distancing”. This will reduce the number of cases at any given time to avoid further overwhelming our health care system. Though this makes sense for our society, this decision can challenge our individual goals.

When you are social distancing and non-essential services are closed, it may not be possible to access in-person care from your physician. This does not mean the opportunity to improve your hair is over, rather, you may have more time to focus on you and to optimize your hair regimen.

AT HAIRCAREMD, WE ARE PROVIDING THE FOLLOWING DO’S AND DON’T’S TO BEST HELP YOUR HAIR.

DO’S:

  1. Consider a virtual consult. If you have never seen a doctor for your hair loss, we are here to help you. Consider a virtual consult to speak with an expert at HairCareMD and come up with a plan. During this time, we will review your medical history and photos of your hair. We can come up with a plan for what to do during “social distancing” as well as a plan for what to do once we are back in full motion.
  2. Keep a routine. Your hair will respond best to a consistent routine. You should not stop Minoxidil, Finasteride, or a vitamin supplement if it has been working for you. If you take a prescription, please feel free to call your doctor for a refill. Pharmacies are open at this time.
  3. Continue your hair hygiene. You should shower and shampoo/condition your hair 2-3 times a week. Although you may shower more than this to reduce germs, most people should not shampoo their hair with each rinse.

DON’TS

  1. Do not give up on your hair. With everyone doing their best, we will get past COVID-19 as a society. This is not the time to throw in the towel.
  2. Don’t compromise your overall safety and health to pursue an in-office treatment for aesthetic hair care this week (in NYC).
  3. Do not make a rigid plan to be seen or to have a hair transplant in the coming month. Details of our situation with COVID are rapidly evolving and we all must be flexible.

PLEASE STAY SAFE EVERYONE.
