When will I see the result after a hair transplant?
A hair transplant involves moving hair from the donor site in the back of the head to the recipient site, which is a region of thinning.
On the day of the transplant, the donor hair follicle is inserted with a short hair shaft. This donor hair will grow from 3 weeks to 3 months (or possibly longer) and then shed. Not all the donor hairs will shed on the same day. This shedding is known as telogen. The follicle (the see from which hair grows) then rests for about 2-3 months and then new growth occurs. The new hair is in for life and does not rely on any topical lotions, pills, or injections. At 3-4 months, hair is thin after a transplant, there is 50% of growth at 5 months, and there is 80% of growth at 8 months after a hair transplant.
The following shows a patient before surgery, at 4 months (little growth) and at 8 months with more growth (80%).
